Starting the Day with the Smell of a Printing Press

I guess you could call me a little old fashion.  There's something about reading a newspaper in the morning that still drives this "old news guy."  It could be keeping up to date on current affairs or it could be the smell of the newspaper.

Wednesday morning, I got the chance to get my fill of the smell of a printing press.  We're having some folders printed by Citizen Printing, a locally owned printing shop in Fort Collins.  Part of the process is to have the client check the printing work prior to going to full print.  They call it a press check (click here for video of printing press).  For me, I was excited to get to see my folders prior to opening a box.  So, there I was early Wednesday morning waking up not to a cup of coffee, but to the smell of a printing press.  The first thing, was to check the colors of the folder, Citizen Printing urges customers to check the tones and colors to make sure everything is okay.

Then it was on to the exciting part.  All of a sudden rollers started to move, the pace picked up and out came my folders.

I have to say I was pleased with the entire process.  Citizen Printing sure does know the printing world.  They've been around for more than 100 years, it was started in 1906 by Wilbur Shafer according to their website.  That says a lot, but I'm told the employees (more than 40 employees) have worked for Citizen Printing for decades.  Now, that's retention.

One more little tidbit.  The next time you open a medicine bottle or something else and there's a tiny folded instructions booklet in it.  There's a good chance that it was folded in Fort Collins at Citizen Printing.
